Second Meeting of the First Academic Committee of the Ministry of Education’s International Joint Laboratory for Green Low-Carbon Urban Renewal Successfully Held

On June 28, 2025, the second meeting of the inaugural Academic Committee of the Ministry of Education’s International Joint Laboratory for Green Low-Carbon Urban Renewal was successfully convened at the School of Architecture and Design, Harbin Institute of Technology.

Prof. Meng Jianmin (Shenzhen University), Prof. Zhuang Weimin (Tsinghua University), Prof. Jian Kang (University College London), Prof. Zhang Tong (Southeast University), Prof. Wang Lan (Tongji University), Prof. Song Kun (Tianjin University), Prof. Peng Changxin (South China University of Technology), Prof. Yang Liu (Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology), Prof. Sun Cheng (Harbin Institute of Technology), Prof. Francesco Novelli (Politecnico di Torino), Prof. Marco Voltini (Politecnico di Milano), along with representatives of the Laboratory Management Committee, attended the meeting.


The meeting was co-chaired by Professor Meng Jianmin and Professor Zhuang Weimin. Professor Sun Cheng, Chinese Director of the laboratory, reported to the assembled experts on the laboratory’s construction over 2024–2025 and its mid-to-long-term development plan. Young scholar Professor Han Yun-Song from HIT and Professor Francesco Novelli from Politecnico di Torino delivered reports on their respective academic research progress.

During the discussion session, the experts engaged in an in-depth dialogue over the laboratory’s achievements, practices in international cooperation, and future directions for development. They highly praised the research outcomes achieved in the fields of green low-carbon technology and urban renewal over the past year, and recommended that the laboratory further focus on its dual main lines of “green & low-carbon — urban renewal”, strengthen cross-disciplinary collaboration and the complementary strengths between China and abroad, pay greater attention to applying for international research projects, and enhance the laboratory’s visibility and influence within the global academic discourse. Finally, the experts unanimously agreed that the laboratory has a strong foundation for development; they proposed that it align with national strategic needs, formulate a systematic list of research tasks, continuously consolidate discipline support and platform construction, and play a demonstrative and leading role among joint laboratories.
